Hello John, could you please explain the background, or ideas supporting the butterfly paintings in a little more detail please?
Also, do you feel that painting about issues such as the middle east conflict allows for a fresh perspective, or simply restates the views of journalists or political parties?

Sorry Bob - hadn't looked at this site for a while.
The butterfly paintings address the idea of visual perception- for instance seeing eye spots as eyes rather than abstract patterns on wings, and how we (and predators) are somehow hard wired to see in a pattern something that we recognise, even if it is merely an illusion. I also marvel at the degree of verisimilitude produced in natural mimicry and am fascinated by its evolutionary story.
My paintings from the middle east were done after visits there in 2002 and I attempted to produce a personal response to what I saw and heard. If they merely restate the views of journalists and political parties then they fail.
